CHCI Annual Workshop: Stories in Immersive Environments

CHCI is planning the Fifth Annual Workshop in "The Future of HCI" series at the Virginia Tech campus. The 2020 Workshop, to be held March 19-20, 2020, will focus on “Stories in Immersive Environments.

The goal of the “Stories in Immersive Environments” Workshop is to establish a leading research program that will address questions regarding the nature of storytelling through immersive technologies (such as virtual reality and augmented reality), and the effects of immersive storytelling on both personal and societal levels.

A striking example of an immersive story is seen in the images shown here from “Under the Net”, a virtual reality (VR) film experience created for the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign to fight malaria worldwide. CHCI member Justin Perkinson directed, wrote, and shot the VR project with the LA/Toronto-based VR production studio Secret Location.

As in previous years, the workshop will feature several invited experts who will highlight research in this area through keynote talks, and motivate break out discussion groups. This year’s  keynote Speakers are Jeremy Bailenson (Stanford), Stephen Ware (University of Kentucky), and Rebecca Rouse (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). The workshop, open to the VT community, will involve researchers from a variety of fields, such as psychology, computer science, humanities, and social science, as well as practitioners such as artists, journalists, and immersive filmmakers. Outcomes of the workshop may include proposals for research, conference and journal publications, and guidelines for the design of immersive stories and for the effective use of immersive environments. We are also planning a public VR exhibition, that will bring to Blacksburg a variety of immersive stories to provide motivation for further discussions.
