Title: The Role of Graphic Design in Smart Built Environments
Presenter: Meaghan Dee

Abstract:

Over the past few years, I have been a part of a team at Virginia Tech working on the FutureHAUS, a revolutionary prototype for the home of the future, which demonstrates how digital technologies, cutting-edge products, and smart building design can unite to make our homes more responsive to our future needs and way of living. (http://futurehaus.tech) My role, as a designer and educator, has been to collaborate with other faculty and teams of students to develop the branding and materials for extensions of the project (such as for the 2018 Solar Decathlon in Dubai) and to create the visual interface design for control tablets and displays. The home of the future will look quite different than what exists today, but we can already see how technology, such as smart objects and tablets, is shifting how we live. In this session, I will share the process of working on the FutureHAUS team and will detail some of the features that will greatly impact the design industry. I will also discuss pros and cons of a world filled with glass slabs and enchanted objects, and I will share the app prototype our team created for controlling the FutureHAUS.
